Physics Resources (physicsresources.net) is a free, non-commercial website run by Darren Byrne, a private individual in Romania. Darren decides how the personal data described here is used, which makes Darren the “data controller” under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). For any question or request about your data, email physicsresources.net@gmail.com.
The short version
- You can use the site without an account, and we don’t ask who you are.
- We don’t sell data, show adverts or use advertising or tracking cookies.
- Students using Homework never give an email address, surname or password.
- Typed answers are marked by an AI marker that never receives anyone’s name.
- Everything is deleted on the timetable below.
When you use the site
| What we collect | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Your network (IP) address, browser type and the page you asked for, including any search you typed, in our host’s request logs | To deliver pages and look into faults or misuse | Up to 1 day |
| Your network address and, in Homework, a random ID for your account or browser, in usage-limit counters | To stop any one network or account overloading the site | Up to 1 day |
| Page views and loading speed, measured without cookies | To see which pages are used and keep them fast | The anonymous visitor tag is discarded after 24 hours; only totals are kept |
| Requests typed into Smart Build and answers typed into Test Your Knowledge quizzes | To read the request or mark the answer, using an AI service. Nothing that identifies you is sent with them | Not stored by us. The AI service keeps them only as long as it needs to |
| Work you save, such as constructs and drafts | Kept in your own browser and never sent to us | Until you delete it or clear your browser’s site data |

We never ask students for an email address, surname, date of birth, photo or school.
Our legal basis is legitimate interests (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)): the teacher’s and school’s interest in setting and checking homework, and ours in providing the tool. We do not rely on consent, so students take part because their teacher added them to a class, not because the student agreed to terms. We keep the data to the minimum the tool needs, and we never use it for adverts or profiling.
Who can see it. Only the student’s own teacher. Students can’t see each other’s work. Darren can reach the database to keep the service running and to deal with requests, and does not look at homework otherwise.
AI marking. Typed answers are marked by an AI marker. It receives the question, the mark scheme and the answer, never the student’s name, class or code. Its marks are practice feedback: the teacher can see and change every mark, and no decision with legal or similarly serious effects is made from them.
Who handles data for us
- Vercel Inc. · USA
Hosts the site and its request logs; measures page views and speed - Neon · USA
Stores the database - Upstash · USA
Stores the usage-limit counters - Google (Firebase) · USA
Teacher sign-in - An AI marking service · USA
Reads Smart Build requests and marks typed answers
Each works under a data processing agreement with us. Data sent to the USA is protected by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework or by the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.
If you email us, your message is kept in our Gmail account for up to 2 years as a record of your request.
Cookies and browser storage
We use no advertising or tracking cookies, and page statistics work without cookies. Your browser stores only what the features you use need: your saved work, layout preferences and, for Homework, the sign-in that keeps you logged in. Because these are needed for the service you asked for, we don’t ask permission first.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, delete or download your data, to limit how it is used, or object to its use. Email physicsresources.net@gmail.com and we will reply within one month. Teachers can also delete students, classes or their whole account in the tool. Students can ask their teacher, or email us; because we hold no contact details for students, we may ask the teacher to confirm who you are.
If you are unhappy with how we use your data, you can complain to Romania’s data protection authority, ANSPDCP (dataprotection.ro), or the authority where you live.
Keeping data safe
The site uses encrypted connections everywhere, and the database is encrypted where it is stored. Student codes are stored only in scrambled form. Sign-in attempts are limited, and each teacher can reach only their own classes. Admin accounts use two-step sign-in. If a breach could put people at risk, we will tell ANSPDCP within 72 hours, and tell the people affected where the law requires.
Changes
The date at the top shows the last change. After any important change, Homework asks teachers to agree again before they carry on.
